FAQ

What is a planting calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

Which seeds should start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

What is the difference in hydroponics and aquaponics?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. It's like having your farm right in your home.

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers in spring is easier when the temperature is lower and the soil remains moist. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature for growing plants indoors is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

What should you do first when you start a garden?

The first step to starting a garden is to prepare it. This includes adding organic matter such as composted manure, grass clippings, leaves, straw, etc., which helps provide plant nutrients. Next, plant the seeds or seedlings in the holes. Then, water well.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

From April to June is the best season for vegetables. This is when the soil temperature is highest and plants grow most quickly. If you live in colder climates, you might wait until July or Aug.

Can I grow vegetables indoors?

Yes, it's possible to grow vegetables inside during the winter months. You will need to get a grow light or greenhouse. You should check the laws in your area before you purchase a greenhouse.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
