FAQ

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. To prevent tree rot, make sure the pot has drainage holes. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

Which kind of lighting is most effective for growing indoor plants?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They provide constant lighting that doesn't flicker or dimm. Fluorescent bulbs come in both compact fluorescent (CFL) and regular varieties. CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

How often should I water my indoor plants?

Indoor plants need watering once every two days. Watering helps maintain humidity levels inside the house. Humidity can be vital for plants that are healthy.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
