The fennel plant is a perennial herb in the carrot family. It has feathery, yellow-colored leaves. Although it is a native of the Mediterranean, it has spread to other parts of the globe. Fennel bulbs can easily be grown from seeds. They are usually planted in mid- to late spring, and can be planted in pots or modules. Because each bulb is quite small, it is best to plant one seed per small container. If you are transplanting a fennel plant from another location, thin the seeds to 12 inches apart and water them frequently to reduce the risk of bolting. You can also grow it in containers, depending upon the location.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. It's great for flavoring dishes, adding flavor to soups, sauces, salads, pasta, and even desserts. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. Add more potting mixes as necessary. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
