How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
