FAQ

Do I need any special equipment?

Non, really. All you need is a shovel, trowel, watering can, and maybe a rake.

What is the most important thing to do before you start a new garden?

When beginning a garden, the first thing to do is to prepare the soil. This includes adding organic matter like composted cow manure, grass clippings leaves, straw, and so on, which will help to provide plant nutrients. Next, you will plant your seeds or seedlings directly into the prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

When should you plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. Basil indoors can be grown in pots with potting mixture. They should be kept out of direct sunlight until they grow leaves. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends upon the type of plant. Some plants need 12 hours of direct sun per day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

When can you plant flowers in your garden?

Planting flowers in spring is easier when the temperature is lower and the soil remains moist. If you live somewhere cold, planting flowers should be done before the first frost. The ideal temperature indoors for plants is around 60°F.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
