FAQ

How long can an indoor plant be kept alive?

Indoor plants can survive up to ten years. To encourage new growth, it is important to repot your indoor plant every few months. Repotting is easy; simply remove the old soil and add fresh compost.

How do I know what type of soil I have?

You can tell by looking at the color of the dirt. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Another option is to test the soil. These tests measure the number of nutrients present in the soil.

Which type of lighting is best for indoor plants?

Because they emit less heat then incandescent lamps, floralescent lights can be used indoors to grow plants. They can also provide steady lighting without flickering and dimming. Both regular and compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs are available. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

What is the first thing to do when starting a garden?

Preparing the soil is the most important step in starting a garden. This includes adding organic material such as composted horse manure, grass clippings or leaves, straw and the like, which provides plant nutrients. Next, plant seedlings or seeds in the prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. If you live outside of a warm climate, it is best not to plant flowers until the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor plants is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do you prepare the soil?

It is simple to prepare soil for your vegetable garden. First, get rid of all weeds. After that, add organic material such as composted soil, leaves, grass clips, straw or wood chips. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
